By and for the people

Oh my. Iran next? I hope it's not true but that is what is now circulating throughout the blogosphere. (Because of that I thought it was important to post it here. I mean I'd hate to have the only blog that didn't report this possible fact. Of course I'll leave it open as a possibility, but at least it will be on my blog and I can say, you heard it here on BerkeleyPC.)

I'm afraid we're doomed at this point. Our government, a government by and for the people, is now a grand experiment that has failed. Soon we'll be locking up people without trial, our congressional leadership will be a bunch of puppets, and the judicial system will only serve to protect the administration. Oh, yeah, I forgot, that’s already happening.

Well then I guess we should look at how we let this happen. Why, would a government by and for the people become what our government has today. Since our constitution is about making sure this doesn't happen, then how can it be so?

Let me tell you about my weekend. I think this could shed some light on the subject.
I was with a group of 12 friends and the conversation turned to politics. The discussion was a heated one which I felt was better than no discussion at all

I sat quietly for most of the discussion in the beginning, but I did have to impart some facts here and there. My favorites, and the ones I repeated the most, were that Iraq did not attack us, Afghanistan is a country not a terrorist organization, and that several members of the Bush administration were also members of PNAC, an organization that has been planning on invading Iraq, or a small middle eastern country, since 1992.

This would throw a monkey wrench into some peoples thinking for about 3 seconds and then they'd be right back on point like I hadn't even spoken.

So after being ignored a few more times I decided it was time to impart some additional facts. Most of the discussion seemed to be opinion based so I thought facts might shake up the discussion some. Since the conversation kept coming back to being attacked on 9/11, I thought that would be a good place to start, and because that’s the area I have the most facts about. So I asked them what they thought caused the buildings to fall.

This got their attention so I suggested that it was not the planes that caused them to fall. A once heated discussion all of a sudden had become a lot lighter and I was nearly laughed out of the room. Everyone there, except ‘partner’ who has taken time along with me to view some of the evidence against the Bush Admin's 9/11 propaganda, turned their attention to me and basically called me a conspiracy nut.
So after the laughter died down and they realized I wasn’t joking, that I was indeed serious I started asking them some additional questions.

I asked them: How do you suppose the 3rd building fell that day if it wasn't hit by a plane?
No one had heard that WTC7 had fallen also.

Did you know that no buildings in history have ever fallen due to fire?
No one knew that.

Did you know that the towers fell in 10 seconds, and WTC7 fell in 6.8 seconds, which is free-fall speed?
Didn't know that either.

Did you know that eyewitness, including building maintenance, firefighters, policemen and others, all reported hearing bombs going off and some saw flashes around the bottom of the building prior to the buildings falling?
Nope.

Did you know that the towers had lost money every year since they were first built due to occupancy issues? Did you know that the buildings had a 2 billion dollar asbestos problem and had been condemned? Did you know that there had been several applications for a permit to tear the towers down that were refused?
No one knew any of that either.

Did you know that Larry Silverstein, a successful real estate investor, bought the buildings in July of 01, 3 months before they were destroyed? Do you think buying buildings with a 2 billion dollar asbestos problem would be a wise decision knowing that that 2 billion dollars would do nothing to stem the occupancy problem? Would a smart man do this? Do you think Larry Silverstein, a successful real estate investor is a stupid man? Did you know he insured the buildings against terrorist attacks and made 7 billion dollars off the insurance settlement?

At some point some different questions started popping up. Most of the questions were around trying to figure out how they could have pulled something of that scale off. It would require a lot of careful planning and covert operations and people were in the buildings and would have noticed, etc. I stayed out of that trap. At this point how it was done is a lot less important than the fact that it was done and that what we were told happened is not what happened. In other words, it doesn't make sense to move to how something happened, until everyone agrees that it happened. Make sense?

I mean I could have told them that that they did have a power down for Labor Day weekend which also resulted in no video security for the weekend. I could have told them that several companies were moved around the building prior to this occurring. I could have told them that the bomb sniffing dogs got an extended vacation prior to the attack. But to me those are still the rumors around the how it was done and would require a lot of fact finding that we would get if we had a real investigation.

I'm amazed though, at how quick they were to dismiss me, laugh me out of the building if you will and call me a conspiracy nut, when they had no information at all. All they know is what the Bush Administration allowed to be told. Exactly what the Bushie’s wanted them to believe is what they believed. Even though no one is disputing the lies, manipulations and utter bs we have heard from this group since they were put into power, they were more willing to believe their story(fool me again), than to listen to someone they know, who has no vested interest in what story they believe.

So who's fault will it be when we become a police state, lose our civil liberties and get locked up for criticizing our leaders?

It's mine. It's yours. It's the media's. It the fault of those who know who show an unwillingness or lack of courage to speak truth to power. And it's our fault for not having the decency to allow those who do have the courage to speak, the time to make their case.

This democracy belongs to us. If we choose to allow it to slip away, fine, but we should at first educate ourselves so we can see what is happening and we should educate ourselves to see what we are giving up when it does occur. Then once we have that knowledge, if we are still ok with it, we can sit back quietly with a nice vodka martini with stuffed olives and watch our freedoms slip away as if we were watching the setting sun.

First They Came for the Jews
Pastor Martin Niemöller

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.
